Luxury beyond Death

The series portrays the paper offerings traditionally burnt in rituals in Vietnamese folk religion. In Vietnam, it is commonly believed that the deceased become reincarnated in the underworld and continue their lives. Relatives burn these paper effigies at the graves of the deceased with the belief that they will need the same luxury items that they had when they were still living. Besides Ghost Money, fake banknotes, various kinds of paper offerings are available in stores. Many of them imitate luxury brand items such as Rolex and Nike. The project highlights our obsession with consumerism whilst simultaneously raising questions about what awaits us in the afterlife.

Ghost Money lacks purpose to the living, but the billions of dollars that we generate also become inaccessible to us in death. Then what’s truly valuable in life? If there is a life afterlife, how do we know that the life we are leading is not an afterlife itself of a different world?
